Todd R. Cole has led the design on a wide range of projects over the past 30 years and currently specializes in the design of residential gardens. Mr. Cole has produced a body of residential landscape design work that is far reaching in its scale, complexity, and style. His projects are located across the continental U.S. and Hawaii, with each project addressing a challenge of ecologic, climatic and topographic suitability. Mr. Cole’s focus has been on the technical competency and craftsmanship of unique garden spaces.
Mr. Cole’s architectural design styles range from minimalist modern to formal French-inspired, as well as the rural vernacular suited to a Montana ranch. There is a strong focus on the suitability of the garden architecture to that of the residence and the suitability of the plant material to the theme of the residence and local environment. Todd also spent ten years involved in urban design, community planning, housing and institutional design projects for various prominent firms in Denver, New York, Philadelphia, and Santa Barbara. Todd’s most recently published projects include private residences in Arizona, upstate New York, North Kona Hawaii, as well as many communities in Northern California.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Todd spent a good part of his formative years wandering the garden ramparts of the abandoned Hudson River estates. Truth and purity in the use of construction and plant materials comes from his appreciation of historical structures and native landscapes. Todd’s favorite work takes the historic precedence into a modern interpretation.
Todd studied at the University of Pennsylvania for his Masters of Landscape Architecture and obtained his Bachelors of Landscape Architecture – Environmental Design at Northern Carolina State University. Todd’s formal training was only a foundation, as his true learning comes in his commitment to creating stimulating design solutions and through his extensive global travel. Todd Cole and Stephen Suzman joined forces from 2003 to 2011. Currently the senior partner of Strata Landscape Architecture, Todd continues his focus on the design of personal landscapes. During his down-time, Todd retreats to his rustic home in a defunct power station located at the bottom of a canyon in Sonoma County.
