Nestled amidst a working vineyard, this landscape design blends contemporary architecture with the pastoral rhythm of Northern California’s wine country.
We were inspired by the agricultural roots of the area and wanted to create an informal, yet interesting garden. We used board form concrete for many elements like the blade wall that extends over the pool to tie to the slats of the new barn. The pool is elevated to feel like a horse trough and to also tie to the details of the blade wall. A shade structure is partially supported by the blade wall and adds a fireplace to create a space that feels warm. A nearby spa doubles as a fountain water feature, with the sounds of moving water adding to the tranquility of the garden.
The materials palette was restrained to just concrete and steel. This was both to downplay the formality and to create a very durable garden. The plant palette was also kept restrained with meadow-like grasses and evergreen shrubs for screening.
This thoughtfully crafted garden serves as both a tranquil retreat and a vibrant social hub while celebrating the surrounding environment.
